    Superintendent’s Message

    October 5, 2016

I am honored to be serving as the Acting Superintendent for the White Plains Public Schools.  The circumstances that led to the need for such an appointment are sobering and I join the community in continuing to keep Dr. Fried and his family in our thoughts and prayers.  I also want to join everyone in thanking Tim Connors for stepping up once again when the District needed him.  His deep commitment to the White Plains community has been very evident in his conversations with me.

I have no agenda in taking on this role other than to serve as a leadership resource in supporting the good things that are happening every day and the progress that is being made in addressing areas where improvement is needed.  For starters, I plan on filling my schedule over the next few weeks with opportunities to meet school personnel, students, parents, and representatives of various organizations that serve the White Plains community.  During these interactions, I will be looking for suggestions on priority areas of focus for the school year that are needs based and reasonable in scope.  This input will provide a valuable context for decision making as we move forward.

White Plains has a well-deserved reputation for taking an enlightened approach in addressing the complex needs of a diverse student population in an urban setting.  The opportunities that are available to students in this district, and the quality of the staff and programs responsible for providing these opportunities, are truly impressive.  I look forward to working with my school district colleagues in doing everything we can to remind everyone in the community and beyond of all the reasons why they should continue to be impressed.

    Regards,

    Howard Smith
    Acting Superintendent
