Our extensive current collection of almost 100 magazines and 6 newspapers includes some in French, Spanish, and Italian. The most current issues can be found on shelves in the center of the library. Back issues are available on request. Articles can be found using The New York Times Index or The Readers Guide, housed in the reference section in the library. Several extensive online databases add to the breadth and depth of student access to periodicals. These are accessible in the Online Resources section of this web site.
White Plains Local News:
Specific daily coverage of White Plains local events.
A varied and up-to-date collection of reference materials supports research in all areas of the curriculum, from science to music and art to literature. A number of general as well as specialized encyclopedias and atlases are also available. Dictionaries are located throughout the library.
A comprehensive collection of video programming is available for classroom use by faculty. Most of the collection has been purchased to support specific curriculum needs. Videos can be located using the library catalog. A viewing area in the media center can be used by small groups when necessary.
Music CD Collection:
The library/media center houses an extensive music collection which can be checked out by faculty and staff. We also loan playback units to support this collection.
Audio Books on Cassette and CD:
A growing collection of audio books is available to students who need this resource. Ask for them at the front desk.
Books, curriculum materials, and journals that examine current educational issues and practice comprise the professional resources collection. This collection is located in the library teacher room. Several networked computers, stand-alone PCs, two printers (one color), and a scanner are also available for faculty use.
A classroom of networked PCs is available for student use in the library media center throughout the school day, before and after school, and during lunch. Students must have valid computer IDs and passwords to use WPHS networked computers. Examples of programs and applications available on the network include: Destiny Catalog Search (the library collection); Microsoft Word; Excel; PowerPoint; Internet Explorer; and a number of online subscriptions.
Single PC Presentation Stations:
Individual PC presentation stations are available to faculty and staff by advance reservation. Each portable station includes a laptop PC, a projector, two speakers, and network capabilities. Please contact library/media center staff for additional information.
Classroom Multiple PC Rolling Carts:
Rolling carts--each containing up to 24 laptop PCs, a printer, and network capabilities--are available to classroom teachers. They offer individualized laptop access to every student in the classroom. These carts must be reserved in advance. Please contact library media center personnel for additional information.
New titles are purchased by the library media specialists and per faculty request throughout the academic year. They are shelved in the "New Book" area for approximately one year.
